About this event

Shakespeare Discussion Group
with Puckie Thomas Gries
Meeting Monday, January 13, 2:30-3:30 pm
at the Sumner Village Community Center
(and Mondays following)

The Shakespeare Discussion Group will start anew with A Midsummer’s Night Dream. Participants will meet weekly on Monday afternoons for an hour (occasional discussions will last longer).

Shakespeare’s works are so ingrained in our culture and so timelessly popular that they reward rereading, discussion, and analysis. This Shakespeare group reads plays and poems together and meets for lively discussions about their language, characters, structure and historical context. Participants also watch clips from provocative films of Shakespeare’s work and videos of relevant material.

Group leader Puckie Thomas Gries looks forward to welcoming new faces to this group. Puckie taught such subjects as Latin, Greek and English literature for over 50 years. Her extensive experience includes serving as Chairman of the Humanities Department at the Maret School and teaching Comparative Literature at Stanford University.

NOTE: Puckie asks participants to use the Folger edition of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This edition may be purchased at a local bookstore (please confirm availability before going) or online (about $10 plus shipping).

MEETING LOCATION: Sumner Village Community Center, Library, 4910 Sentinel Drive in Bethesda, 20816

Additional information will be sent to confirmed registrants.
