Established in 1972 to manage the museum grounds, Smithsonian Gardens extends the Smithsonian’s museum experience in a public garden setting, inspiring visitors with exceptional displays and educating them about horticulture, plants, the natural and built environments, and artistic design. Learn about how Smithsonian Gardens has matured into a world-class public garden and living museum with our expert guide, Collections and Education Manager Cindy Brown. In warm months, verdant garden beds are splashed with color and buzzing with activity. Be inspired by beautiful photographs of the collections. Explore stunning plants and greenhouses, as well as their growth and positive impact. The public gardens now include over 180 acres of outdoor gardens including 13 public exhibition gardens often called the Smithsonian institution’s “Museum Without Walls.”
